How to care for your skin while pregnant 2 - Lily Kew
Bravo! We’ve got more for you here. Read on!
- Make the switch
Be wary of toxins, chemicals and harmful ingredients sipping into our body system via the skin, even more so for pregnant women. Pregnancy is one of the most vulnerable periods as the embryo grows by taking in nutrients from mummy. By choosing organic you can reduce the harmful ingredients that may get transferred to the baby and place its health and development at risk.
- To wear make-up or not?
Wearing makeup is a big concern during pregnancy because foundation, concealer, powder etc are filled with artificial pigments, dyes and other chemicals.
As a brand advocating natural beauty, our take on this is to go bare #BareSkinRocks and free your skin from all the harmful chemicals and toxins. Why? Simply because makeup suffocates your skin, clogs your pores and cause even more breakouts, dullness, uneven skin tone, pigmentation and sensitivity. It also causes further irritations and deterioration to already sensitive skin.
Instead of covering up your flaws, how about working on how you can achieve skin so clear and healthy that you can ditch your makeup for good? It is proven possible by our founder, Lily Kew, rocking without a tinge of makeup on her face during pregnancy (See pic below - Lily, 48, in her second trimester now). Oh the red lips? Yea, that’s our organic tinted lip balm. Cool, eh?

3. Combat hormonal acne during pregnancy!
Your body goes through hormonal changes during pregnancy; one of the most common skin issues is hormonal acne. With the rise of the Androgen hormones, it is inevitable that preggies' skin tends to produce more sebum. Fret not, we gottcha acne under control.
Lily shares how she uses our Kew Organics pH Normalizing Series to control sebum production, prevent clogged pores, acne, inflammation and breakouts.
1) pH Balance Purifying Cleanser
During pregnancy, your skin tends to get oilier than usual. Say bye to acne with the ultimate combo of Burdock + Bergamot which removes excessive sebum and reduce skin inflammation. Use an oil control cleanser twice a week and a hydrating cleanser on other days.

2) Kombu Multi-Mineral Aqua Cleanser
Use this once or twice a week, depending on the skin condition of each individual, for deep cleansing as it deep cleanses the pores of accumulated toxins; clearing congestion and clogs. Always a treat to use this as it leaves your skin feeling minty, cool and refreshing. Just what preggies need as our body temperature is usually higher than usual.

3) Refreshing Clarifying Tonic
This toner is antibacterial which helps to tame and kill acne-causing bacteria. It helps to soothe and restore the skin from redness and inflammation. Packed with seaweed, it also helps to refine skin, tighten pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Use twice a week and alternate with a hydrating toner on the other days.

To add on, remember to always hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Apart from controlling sebum production, it is important not to over strip your skin’s moisture and upset the skin’s acid mantle. Always replenish the skin’s hydration by using products that can lock in your skin’s moisture. By alternating between oil control and hydrating products, it helps to balance the skin’s pH level and regulate sebum production to keep acne at bay!
- Salicylic Acid
- Vitamin A (Retinol)
It is commonly misinterpreted that these ingredients has to be completely avoided, as they are potentially harmful during pregnancy.
High doses of salicylic acid in its oral form (aspirin) and vitamin A (retinol) have been shown to cause complications in pregnancy. However, no evidence has shown that it is dangerous when applied to the skin as skincare concentration of these ingredients are low. On top of it, our skin only absorbs small amounts of acids when applied as skincare, making the risk during pregnancy low.
For extra precaution, you can look out for products with less than 2% of salicylic acid and vitamin A between (0.04% to 0.1%).
