MYTH NO MORE – PART 1 SKINCARE

by admin 15 Aug 2020
With so many beauty brands vying to be the best, undoubtedly, there is an overload of information in the beauty space which makes it quite challenging for consumers  to differentiate between myths and facts. In our beauty salons, we see so many faces flawed due to a lack of correct skincare knowledge. We hear so many customers lament they buy skincare products based on the brand’s marketing messages, with some being bogus, only to realize it is not suitable for them,  and in some serious cases, cause skin damages.  As the saying goes, the truth will set you free.  Today, we will debunk some beauty myths so you’ll do only what works!

Cleanse

Tone

Hydrate

 Cleanse, Tone & Moisturise
Cleanse, Tone & Hydrate
Since forever, beauty brands advocate these 3 steps: Cleanse, tone and moisturise. Well, yea… but not quite right, otherwise why would so many people still have flaws on their face and have to use makeup as a cover up? At Kew organics, we say, to transform (Yes, not improve but transform) your skin and achieve clear, healthy and makeup-free skin, do cleanse, tone and hydrate.  And here’s why to this disruptive thinking:
Your skin has sebaceous glands which produce sebum, but you do not have water glands. How do you then hydrate your skin? Even if you drink 8 cups of water per day, it is insufficient when the external environment is constantly drawing moisture from your skin. Most importantly, it is necessary to hydrate and replenish your skin’s water loss.
Yes, you still cannot skip moisturisers entirely even if you have oily skin. Give your skin a boost by using moisturizers 2-3 times a week. If you have dry skin, of course, you have to increase the frequency and adjust to your skin’s needs accordingly. The moral of the story is – regardless of your skin type, it is crucial to hydrate with a serum such as our Megaboost Hyaluronic Acid + Concentrate Serum which binds water molecules and locks in hydration. Or if you are looking for one with anti-aging benefits, our Elixir Hydrating Concentrate Serum fights premature aging by tapping on organic plant-based stem cell therapy to boost and renew your skin. Your skin will thank you back with clean, clear and healthy skin! 2. All about cleansers

Foam Cleanser

Gel Cleanser

 Foam cleansers are more gentle
Gel cleansers may be better for you
Well, some may have misconceptions that foam cleansers are more gentle as they are soft and bubbly. In reality, it is the reverse; the ingredients responsible for those little bubbles are the culprit that strips away your skin’s natural layer of moisture, leaving your skin squeaky clean, but oily again quickly.  Gel cleansers, on the other hand, are gentle, effective and normalizes the skin’s pH, of course, with the right one.  I must say our Absolutely Youthful Hydra Cleanser with customers from all nations buying it either in-store or online, fits the bill.

Oil Cleanser

Milk Cleanser

Are oil cleansers better for removing makeup on a daily basis?
Guess what, milk cleansers are sufficient
If you haven’t heard, oil cleansers shook the beauty community so much that many brands added them to their lines. They are fantastic to dissolve residues, lift excess sebums, remove blackhead and makeup all at once. On the contrary, they may be an overkill if used daily as they clog your pores and further aggravate cystic acne, if any.
Milk cleansers are suitable for most skin conditions, including oily or acne-prone skin, because they are light-weight with just a tinge of oil which is excellent for removing makeup thoroughly. Grab our Mandarin Acai Cleansing Lotion which clarifies, exfoliates and renews skin all at once.  What’s more, it is able to gently exfoliate the excessive dead skin cells, lighten or remove eyeshadow stains and oil seeds, as well as minimize lines and wrinkles around the eye area.  Witness the improvement of your skin’s clarity in just weeks!

Gel Cleanser

Milk Cleanser

One-step cleansing is enough to cleanse your skin
Double-cleansing is key for everyone
We can’t emphasize enough on double-cleansing in the evening because it is the make or break to good skin.  If you are new to this concept, here’s what you’ve been missing out.
The excessive sebum and dead skin cells, sweat and dirt accumulated throughout the day can’t be removed with a gel or foam cleanser because oil and water do not mix together. Hence, the first cleanse must be a milk cleanser, with or without makeup, as it acts as a magnet to attract and draw pollutants out of your pores. Next, follow-on with a gel cleanser to cleanse thoroughly. Trust us, an extra minute goes a long way.  Do it and be awed by the results; see and feel the difference for yourself! 3. All about exfoliation

Physical Exfoliant

Liquid Exfoliant

Exfoliation is only for young or acne skin?
You need to exfoliate more frequently as you age
Exfoliate at all stages of your life, we would say, if you asked.  Why? Because as you age, your metabolic rate slows down, which in turn retards the skin renewal process.  The FAQ is,  how often? Well, generally, once or twice a week suffice.  However, to reap the best out of it, consult a professional skin advisor as every individual has different skin conditions.  Our green beauty advisor is just a phone call away.  We pride ourselves as your green beauty partner to journey with you to achieve your skin goals.
It is so essential to slough off your excess dead skin cells regularly as it escalates the skin renewal process and encourages the rejuvenation of cells.  Our award-winning Divinely Gentle Micro-Exfoliant contains Adzuki Rice and Bamboo Powder to gently exfoliate excessive dead skin cells; unveiling smooth and soft complexion.  Great on sensitive skin too! ‘Tis how you’ll look way younger than your biological age.  Say hola to healthy, youthful, clear and glowing skin!

At-home Peels

Salon Peels

Skin peel, AHA & BHA thin out skin?
Nah, the gist of it is in the number of frequency, percentage of acidity & aftercare
Skin peels (AHA & BHA) are absolutely winning the battle for exfoliation because they penetrate deeper into the skin layers to remove excessive dead skin cells by breaking down the glycocalyx – The connective membrane which binds your skin cells. Over-exfoliation is definitely not the gateway to clear and healthy skin, however, this does not mean your skin will be thinned out. It all depends on the frequency of usage, acidity of the peel, as well as the post-treatment care.
For at-home peels, they should be done no more than the recommended usage.  Please do read the instructions carefully for optimal results. As for the percentage of the acids, please see below:
  • AHAs – Look for a product with a pH of less than 4 and a concentration of 4-10%
  • BHAs – Look for a product with a concentration of 1-2%; the pH does not make much of a difference
For salon peels, expect your new healthy and baby skin cells to be unveiled after a peel treatment.  As they are more vulnerable, it is a must to replenish moisture and hydrate adequately so as to strengthen the skin’s immunity. No, not with any conventional or OTC products.  Make sure you load up with lots of clean, toxic-free, pure, organic skin care products to feed and nourish your skin. I mean, if you are putting good food into your mouth to nourish the organs in your body, all the more you need to do so for your skin, which, apparently, is the largest organ.  Feed your skin with organic goodness, people! One such peel is none other than our award-winning Sugar Cane Royal Flush Exfoliant.  It contains an organic cocktail of Glycolic, Malic Acid, Salicylic Acid and many revitalizing Botanical Extracts to unveil a youthful & healthy complexion. Makeup-free skin is on your way! 4. All about sunblock  Sun Protection Factor (SPF), the higher the better
No, SPF 25 is enough for daily use
It seems logical that SPF 30 has double protection versus SPF 15. However, the math principles do not apply to SPF numbers:
  • SPF 15 protects against 93% of UV rays
  • SPF 25 protects against 96% of UV rays
  • SPF 30 protects against 97% of UV rays
  • SPF 50 protects against 98% of UV rays
Well, now you know, the higher SPF number does not mean double or triple protection.  It is actually an indication of the duration of protection. You may ask, how is it calculated? Here’s how it works:
(SPF) Calculation:
Take the time you would normally burn in the sun without protection (20 minutes is normally the threshold on a light-skinned individual)
Eg. SPF 25 X 20 minutes of sun protection = 500 minutes = 8+ hours

SPF 15 300 mins= 5 hours
SPF 25 500 mins= 8+ hours
SPF 30 600 mins= 10 hours
SPF 50 1000 mins= 16+ hours

SPF 25 is good enough for everyday use.  SPF 30 is for when you are exposed to direct sunlight, while SPF 50 is for long hours of sun exposure. The bottom line is, reapplication is key to make sure that your protection isn’t compromised. Apply sunblock only when outdoors
Apply indoors too as yellow and blue-light may cause hyperpigmentation and premature aging
Get your morning skincare regime right by applying sun protection even when you’re indoors because your phone and laptop are constantly emitting High-Energy Visible (HEV) light which attacks your skin cells and breaks down collagen and elastin, causing premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Our Ultra-Fluid Tinted UV Protector SPF 25 is a sunscreen product that combines a colored-base with UV protection. Apart from protecting your skin against the UV rays, they deliver a healthy glow to keep you looking fresh throughout the day.  This two in one benefit allows you to cut back on your getting-ready time.
As the saying goes, if you want different results, do things differently.  So yea… Reset your skincare regime if you’re guilty of any of the myths above and get ready for clear, healthy and naturally glowing skin! More myths, dos and don’ts coming your way in our Part 2.  Stay tuned!
