In an interview with Society A, Lily Kew, the founder of Kew Organics demonstrates how she broke the bias.
Society A: What % of your workforce are female? What are their profiles like on age range?
Lily Kew: 99% : 1% / Averagely <30 - >50
Society A: How do you ensure that you give equal opportunity to men and women at your company?
Lily Kew: Our recruitment is based on the candidate's drive and experiences for the job match. Thus, we will not look at gender as our top considerations. In fact, I am always open to having more opposite gender for a female dominating industry.
Society A: Is important that you work with fair-trade vendors/partners in your production line?
Lily Kew: Definitely. We support and aim to achieve sustainable and equitable trade relationships. In fact, it's one of Kew Organics aims to improve the lives of women / society in need. A great example will be our collaboration with Free Set for one of the gift items - an organization that saved many sex workers whom taken from homes in villages and communities across West Bengal.
Society A: How important is gender equality to you today?
Lily Kew: I think equal opportunities should be given based on one’s passion and capabilities with no other coloured lens to influence our perceptions on such stereotypes. It should not be framed that certain gender or age group is better in performing or can do the roles better.
For example if men cannot perform, the maternal roles of a mother or a woman cannot think logically without emotions in a business world context. When in fact, some men are taking up the role as a penguin dad to be so involved in taking care of their kid/s’ growing stages since birth and some women who are running high-flyer positions in some big organizations not forgetting they too need to juggle between their job and family at the same time.
Society A: What #BreakTheBias (eg. stepping out of the conventional ideas/expectations society has on women) mean to you?
Lily Kew: It is certainly a good move on this year’s theme stepping away from discernments and stereotypes to delude the perceptions. We should learn to see things at different angles and embrace the acceptance in each other’s perfections and imperfections. Therefore, our differences will be valued and appreciated. In addition, it also pushes us to unleash our potential and strength. which otherwise we may not know we possess. Taking my own experiences for example, while many perceive woman from 40’s onwards should enjoy their lives or plan for retirement since they will be heading towards their golden years. But I took the road less traveled - I launched Kew Organics, my organic beauty business, at 43 and grow the brand from a humble HDB abode estate to 4 outlets, 1 franchise concept store, 2 counters including Society A and Tang Plaza, 3 omni platforms today, each with customised bespoke facial treatments and product ranges catered to meet the skin needs of different target audiences. At the same time, I gave birth to 2 children at aged 45 and 48.

Lily Kew: Don’t be dismayed or swayed by the naysayers. Be strong in your faith, listen to your inner voice, have trust and confidence in yourself and believe you can do it to #BreakTheBias.
One bias that we would like to see changed is that women need to put on makeup to look attractive. Women have it drilled into them from a young age, to be successful, from dating to job interviews to forming friendships with other popular girls, they need to be pretty.
